Originally designed for the E30, the shock mounts are the weakest point on the rear suspension for the E36, and E46, and Z3. After two decades and five redesigns, it’s only a matter of time before the factory mounts on your BMW fail. Odd noises such and metal-to-metal banging or clanking could be a sign of failed shock mounts. We strongly recommend replacing these when installing new shock absorbers or during any suspension work where you have easy access to the rear mounts as part of good preventative maintenance.
